This technique is a combination orthodontic/surgical
procedure.
The surgical procedure "tricks" the bone around the
teeth to believe that it is broken and it enters a rapid healing
mode. Tooth movement then becomes very rapid.
A bone grafting procedure is done -similar to what a gum specialist
would do to treat gum recession problems. CAT scan studies have
shown that this technique results in thicker bone around the teeth,
which is a very good thing.
Our experience is that the bulk of tooth movement is completed
in about 6-7 months and patients are placed in retainers about
10 months after starting.
